About Prostate Awarenss Australia

Prostate Awareness Australia is an industry initiative funded by the Building Employees Redundancy Trust (BERT) and established to i) raise the awareness of prostate cancer to men and their families within the building, construction, and allied industries, and ii) provide funding for the advancement of prostate cancer research with our partners at the Translational Research Institute, Prince Alfred Hospital. Funding is provided to our charity Prostate Awareness Qld Inc which supports our coordinators providing health education and awareness to employees in their workplace through engaging and informative site talks, workshops, and toolbox meetings. It is ‘medical made easy’ for both men and women of all ages. The content is centered on evidence-based guidelines and covers:

  • What is prostate cancer,
  • Risks, detection, and diagnosis,
  • Men’s health matters,
  • Early detection = prevention campaign.

Our Charity, Prostate Awareness Qld Inc was launched in July 2020. Our objective is to raise awareness and start the conversation with men on why detecting prostate cancer early is crucial.

Prostate cancer is the second biggest killer of men in Australia, behind coronary heart disease. We feel if these are the statistics, and this cancer is claiming over 3,000 lives per year, why is there not more awareness?

Start the conversation

Our objective is to specifically engage with every worker on a construction site, yard, or workplace. From the staff in the contractor’s office to the traffic controllers out on the road, regardless of position or title, everyone can become involved to raise awareness of prostate cancer. Young guys on site can start the conversation with older mates and bosses, apprentices who hear the message can talk about it with the Dads, and young women, wives and Mums can take it home and encourage the men in their lives to go and have a check-up.

Having a chat about your prostate should be as common and easy as talking about the footy with work mates on a Monday morning – we know it’s not, but we want it to be so. Our goal is to break down the walls and get men talking about their health with their co-workers. This is so important in the quest to promote prostate cancer awareness and save lives.

We want to encourage men to go to the doctors regularly, complete simple tests to detect prostate cancer, and then be able to treat abnormal cells early to avoid further implications. PAA is here to bring health education and awareness to men and their families.

We are currently working closely with the construction division to raise awareness as it is a heavily male dominated sector. However, this is only the start of our mission.

What is our Vision?

To eliminate the devastation of prostate cancer. Early detection of this cancer can increase your chances of survival by 99%. Therefore, we are aiming for zero deaths of prostate cancer across Australia.

What is our Mission and how will we achieve this?

Creating awareness and education of prostate cancer to the building and construction industry in Qld. Awareness and education of prostate cancer will ensure men are getting regular check-ups, which will ensure early detection and prevention of the cancer.
